VIDEO: Sue Perkins talks playing closeted lesbian in new sitcom

Openly lesbian comic and broadcaster stars in new BBC sitcom Heading Out, about a woman who has not come out to her parents.

British comedian and openly gay TV presenter Sue Perkins stars in a new sitcom 'Heading Out'.

The new series will follow the life of neurotic vet Sara Ford as she tries to live openly with her friends, keeping her lesbianism from her parents.

In an interview with The Sun, Perkins said: 'I think people will think it's autobiographical, but it so isn't.

'I rang my parents up, crapping myself, and tried to be very dramatic and theatrical, telling my mom I needed to talk to her.

'And she said, "Is there something you want to tell us, like you're gay?" She ruined it!'

The Great British Bake-off host added: 'I really hope people like [the sitcom], it's made with so much love.

'But it won't be everybody's cup of tea, because it's me and not everyone's going to like me.'

Perkins states firmly it is not a 'gay sitcom', but mainstream.

The 43-year-old said: 'It's set in the world I know, which is a load of straight people going, "Can you shut up, your relationships are just as boring as everyone else's!"

Heading Out begins airing tonight (26 February) at 10pm on BBC2.
